Start with a Book is designed to help address summer learning loss. This website provides a wide range of free and low-cost resources to help ensure that kids keep learning and exploring during the summer months and beyond. By engaging children in literacy activities over the summer, it gives them opportunities to build background knowledge, deepen vocabulary, improve reading fluency — and be ready in the fall for a successful school year.
Books are categorized by theme so you can choose subjects that you know interest your kid. This site is not really for kids to peruse, but rather for adults to find good reading resources to offer kids.
What does your child love to see, explore, and learn about? If you have a young detective, explorer, artist, athlete or superhero at home or a child fascinated by dinosaurs, planes, bugs, birds, building, animals, the moon and stars, tall tales, music, money, nature, water, or thunder and lightning, you'll find a summer theme that matches his curiosities and interests.
